The Majuro Cooperative School is a private institution that relies mainly on tuition and donations to cover the costs of our operation. It is for this purpose that this part of our web site is presented so that people from around the world can participate in the funding of our great, 30 year old educational experiment. Yes, we need your help: to purchase books, computers, teaching materials, and to renovate our facilities. We are audited each year by the Deloite-Touche accounting firm: for 2003-2004, our most recent audit, we had no "findings." MCS School Year 2003-2004 Audit in .PDF
Each individual, government or corporate donor will receive a letter from our School Board President confirming the receipt of the donation and a description as to how it will be used for our school. Thank you for your kind consideration.
Current funding needs:
Please Help! Dear Potential Donor, The Majuro Cooperative School Board and the MCS PTA have decided to move forward with a 9th grade class beginning with the 2008-2009 school year. It is our hope that this initial step will eventually lead to a complete--grades 9 to 12--WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) accredited high school in the future--should we be able to secure the necessary funding.
As a long time Board member of the Majuro Cooperative School, and more importantly, as a parent who has already sent two children off-island for high school, I believe this may be the single most important project that I have worked on during my 26 years in the Marshall Islands. I know firsthand that the trauma that both parent and child suffer when they are separated at such a crucial age in a child’s development, usually 12 or 13 years old, is very overwhelming. I currently have a daughter in high school in the US, and though she is doing wonderfully in school, she is miserable because of the distance between herself and her family members. We only get to see her 2 months out of the year. I still have two young children at the Majuro Cooperative School and I would like very much for them to stay with my family through high school, which is one of the main reasons why the Board and the parents of the school have organized themselves to start this very worthwhile project: It is time for this very painful exodus of our young people to stop.
Even though the idea of forming a high school has been discussed by the MCS Board in the past, until now we never had the Board expertise or the high caliber of school staff that we currently have. We have just added two new Board members, Ms. Kino Kabua, who is a former MCS student and the current Acting Secretary of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Ben Graham, also a former student who recently graduated from Georgetown University with an MBA. Our staff is headed by our principal, Ms. Kathy Stratte, a very experienced and capable woman who been in the education field for over 30 years. I believe that the combination of these marvelous people and the great desire on the part of the parents to begin the new school are two of the three most important foundational aspects needed for the successful completion of this project. The final piece, of course, is the funding we will need to get the 9th grade started in a highly professional, well-organized manner.
Outside financial support is absolutely crucial for us to get this project off the ground. We would very much appreciate your help in an endeavor that will profoundly help the people of the Marshall Islands because our school will be able to offer our families the choice of a high level of high school education right here in the islands.

*The Current PTA Wish List:
-A covered walkway from classrooms to cafeteria to use on rainy days;
-3 new teachers' desks to replace rusted desks with non-working drawers;
-supplementary literacy materials for primary classrooms and struggling students at intermediate level;
-small stage area for graduation, assemblies, and concerts;
-partial scholarships for students*During the 2003-04 school year, the deteriorating teacher-housing complex was identified as a key issue for improvement because the quality of the apartments directly affects teacher hiring. The Board has moved ahead with this important project after receiving a loan from the Bank of Guam. The building was completed in September of 2007.
*There is a constant need for funding for the upgrade of our facilties and for various kinds of educational materials.
*We also are asking that potential donors sponsor children to go to our school. If you are interested in sponsoring a child for a year at the Majuro Cooperative School (about $2,000), or even helping out with a partial scholarship for a student, please contact the principal at the following e-mail: coopschl@ntamar.net
