Fall 2011 High School Report

2011-12 Will Be a School Year to Remember

The Majuro Cooperative High School is off to a great start! It is fun to watch our 52 students in grades 9 through 12, all motivated and eager to learn. As I wander around our campus and talk with students and staff, I am amazed to see the learning already taking place, just one short month into our new school year.

Our high school students take seven classes each day. Math, English, and Science are all part of the curriculum, as well as Technology, Music, Japanese, and College Seminar. Today the Music students are taking turns at Karaoke while the Environmental Science class is learning how to make “earth boxes,” containers that will grow small but efficient gardens in the Marshall Islands. The Health students are learning how to eat right so they can combat the diabetes that is riddling the islands. Each student has taken a vow to give up something unhealthy, such as soda, for at least a week. Across campus the U.S. History teacher has his students doing cooperative group work related to pre-colonial times and the English teacher has his ninth graders debating the pros and cons of uniforms in the school. It’s fun to be the principal at a school doing such interesting things!

In the midst of all of our academic work, we took two days to enjoy the second annual retreat to Eneco. It was great fun taking a boat with 93 middle and high school students to the small island where we focused on culture, team building and substance abuse prevention. This was a great time of bonding for staff and students; I believe the retreat is an experience unique to our school and want to acknowledge and thank the Single State Agency for Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment for funding our trip.

Of course our BIG news is that June 02, 2011 will be commencement day for our first graduating class! I can feel the energy in the air as the parents gear up to plan for our historic event.  Twelve seniors will don caps and gowns and participate in a ceremony that marks their send-off to college. I can hardly wait to hear what they all do a year from now.

Stay posted, I expect a lot of good news from Co-op High School this year. Meanwhile, if you’d like to be a guest speaker or volunteer with one of our events or activities, give me a call or send an e-mail!
